2011 Pinewood Derby a Rousing Success!

By all accounts, the 2011 Pinewood Derby was a great success! After some hard work by all our boys (and parents too!), we had a great day of racing on Saturday. Pack 106 continued the tradition of some really fast cars, coupled with some very imaginative designs! We added to the event this year with “Driver’s Licenses” for the boys, too.

Next stop is Coco Keys next weekend, followed by the Worcester Sharks Sleep-over on February 5th, and then the culmination of the Scout Year at our 2011 Blue and Gold Banquet on February 13th! Winners and awards for Speed, Design, and a bunch of other categories will be announced at the Blue and Gold.

Congratulations to all the racers for the great jobs they did on the cars!

Pinewood Derby schedule & venue changes

The weigh-in for the 2011 Pinewood Derby has been rescheduled from Friday to Thursday, January 19th. We’re also changing the time and schedule a bit to accommodate for the fact that we understand that this might pose an issue for some people, and adding an alternative weigh-in period on Saturday.

To make things smoother, we’re going to stagger the weigh-in times for the Dens. The schedule for Thursday night is as follows:

Tigers: 7:15pm
Wolves: 7:35pm
Bears: 7:55pm
Webelos: 8:15pm

In addition to the weigh-in night change, the venue for the Pinewood Derby itself has been changed to St. James Parish in South Grafton. The main event will still be occurring from 12:30-3:30pm.

To accommodate people who can’t make it to Thursday night’s weigh-in, there will be an alternate weigh-in on Saturday morning from 9-10am, held at St. James Church. We’d like to request that, if at all possible, you use the Thursday night weigh-in.

Also, as requested previously, please have your boys wear their full uniforms for whichever weigh-in event you attend.

One thing that we hadn’t mentioned prior to now is that a local Girl Scout Troop will be selling cookies at the Pinewood Derby. They will be the only refreshments available at the event.

Weigh-in Night info

The weigh-in for the 2011 Pinewood Derby is this Friday! To make things smoother, we’re going to stagger the weigh-in times for the Dens. The schedule is as follows:

Tigers: 7:00pm
Wolves: 7:15pm
Bears: 7:30pm
Webelos: 7:45pm

Also, please note that we’ll be taking pictures of the cars AND the boys the night of the weigh-in, so please have your boys dress in their full uniforms with neckerchiefs.

There will be two or three weigh-in stations, and one or two modification stations. As previously communicated, try to have your boy’s car as close to 5 ounces as possible, with easy-to-remove weights applied to take it over. It’s far easier to remove weight that way than via drilling. Please ensure that the car is fully lubricated before weigh-in, as after the car is handed in, it will be garaged for the night, and it won’t be handled again by the boy until after the races on Saturday. We will have a movie playing for entertainment.

To check the weight of the car prior to Friday, the Post Office will be happy to weigh the car. Alternatively, if you have a balance scale, 28 nickels is about 5 ounces.

For Saturday:

Please arrive promply by 12:30, and please have your son bring a flashlight or two. We’re going to have an “opening ceremony” with the boys waving flashlights, which should be a ton of fun.

We will likely need some additional adult help on Saturday. If you’re willing to assist, please see one of the leaders when you arrive.

Finally, please note that registration for the CoCo Key event on January 29th is due on Saturday. The registration form is here – please contact Jennifer Rodrique if you have any questions regarding this event. Late registrations will not be accepted.
